Corgi is the registered trademark of Playcraft toys (a sister corporation to Mettoy before they merged). With a factory based in Swansea, South Wales, its vehicles first appeared in 1956 and featured windows that competitor Dinky did not. The Corgi motor club was launched that December, and a regular newsletter was published to inform collectors of new releases and company developments. Mettoy became a publicly traded company on June the 13th, 1964. The popularity of its quality die-cast models brought prosperous times through the 1960's and 70's. A declining market led to financial troubles for Corgi in the late 1970's, and by 1983 the company was ready to close, but for a buy-out of the management. The company was reformed and renamed, Corgi Toys Limited in 1984. A new marketing approach was adopted and quality diecast replicas made their way around the world. In 1990, Mattel purchased Corgi Toys Limited and the Swansea plant was closed in favour of Mattels Leicester facility. On August 7th, 1995 Corgi was once again in private hands under the leadership of Chris Guest. Corgi Classics Limited moved from the Mattel building to another down the road at the Meridian Business Park. Corgi was sold to Zindart in 1999. Growth in the new millennium has been evident in the ambitious Unsung Heroes line of military replicas and most recently in the 2004 release of the new Batman series.
